II am running for the Vermont State Senate to bring your ideas together with my skills with the concept of growing, promoting and protecting a resilient community in Central Vermont and throughout the state. The history of my professional career has centered on solving extremely complex problems. In two decades working on environmental issues in the United States and abroad, as well as in 18 years as a professional legal advisor, I have participated in and managed multi-faceted environmental projects, coordinated with scores of experts and state and federal agencies, worked with multi-million-dollar budgets, and developed an approach to decision-making that puts listening and problem resolution at the heart of the process. In addition, my three terms on the Barre Town school board and years as elected chair of the supervisory board have honed my capacity to work at the local level: learning the facts that have immediate bearing on my neighbors’ lives, hearing as many perspectives as possible, and then formulating inclusive, consensus-based, reasoned conclusions. I have greatly enjoyed the broad scope of issues that faces these boards and have a deep respect for the many people who both help create and support solutions that work for all. As a mother of two young daughters, I understand the concerns and needs of families who struggle with economic and educational issues. I believe that our future success as a society is extremely dependent on providing a world-class education to all of the children in Vermont. We have a lot of work to do, but together we can achieve goals that benefit all of us. I am committed to stewardship of our natural resources and will work to protect clean water and clean air – a goal that is consistent with creating a viable future for all Vermonters. I believe in continuing Vermont’s leadership tradition of environmental protection and will work to create green-collar jobs. Part of my professional experience includes understanding and working with clients to identify unique and innovative solutions to the increasing need for addressing energy demands. This experience will allow me to bring a larger-world perspective to the Senate and to inform lawmakers of the opportunities Vermont should explore to ensure the most efficient, independent and renewable energy. We don't have to pit the "Vermont Way" against long-term economic viability and security. By supporting small business and unleashing innovation in all aspects of industry, Vermont can have and grow a sustainable and vibrant economy. Success and consensus don't have to be strangers, and I am not afraid to pursue both. As a Vermont state senator, I will take seriously the obligation to represent the interests of all Washington County residents, working together to build the path to a better future for all Vermonters. An effective senator has not only a constituency to support and be the voice of, but must also have vision, experience and a wider knowledge of, and belief in, the possible. Effective lawmakers work hard to communicate their best ideas but work equally hard to incorporate and adapt the good ideas of others. If I am elected, I will represent my constituency and the people of Vermont with the highest sense of duty and service, and I will bring everything I have experienced and, indeed, everything I am as person, to the work at hand. |
